# sleep

The `sleep` step type pauses execution for a set duration, a simple building block for pacing custom commands and workflows around external systems that need time to settle.

```yaml
steps:
  - name: wait_for_api
    type: sleep
    timeout: 30s
```

## Fields

- **`timeout`**
  Optional sleep duration, such as 
  `5s`
  , 
  `1m`
  , or 
  `2m30s`
  . Defaults to 
  `1s`
  . The 
  `sleep`
   step gives 
  `timeout`
   this meaning of its own, so it is the duration to sleep and not a limit on the step.

The step result value is the resolved duration.
